RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Depression is one of many comorbid conditions associated with diabetes. The rationale for this study is to examine the prevalence of depressive symptoms in adults with diabetes mellitus type II. Furthermore, the association between depressive symptoms and glycemic control will also be analyzed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A chart review of 59 diabetes mellitus type II patients from a family practice clinic in San Juan, Texas was performed. These patients were screened for depressive symptoms using the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) during their annual physical exam. Since many of these patients have been treated in this clinic for many years for their multiple comorbidities, it is possible to evaluate their responses to the PHQ-9 over consecutive years and compare them with their glycemic control using a HbA1c level. Data was evaluated by using biological parameters, such as age and gender, and the clinical parameter of a HbA1c level. Inferential statistics, such as prevalence, frequency, correlation, and p-value, were also used in analyzing the data. RESULTS: Depressive symptoms were analyzed using the PHQ-9. In 2016, 2017, and 2018, female diabetics were found to have a higher prevalence of depressive symptoms. When comparing diabetes and age, in 2016, those who were between the ages of 65 and 74 and 75 and older had a higher incidence of depressive symptoms. Furthermore, in 2017 and 2018, patients 75 and older also had a higher frequency of depressive symptoms. The controlled diabetic population was also found to have a greater rate of depressive symptoms. However, after careful analyzation, there was no significant relationship between glycemic control and depressive symptoms. CONCLUSION: Many diabetics have comorbid depressive symptoms. Even though this study showed no relationship between depressive symptoms and glycemic control, the treatment of depressive symptoms in diabetics may help to prevent the multiple life altering complications that diabetes can cause.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Studies of the molecular mechanisms of nerve regeneration have led to the discovery of several proteins that are induced during successful nerve regeneration. RICH proteins were identified as proteins induced during the regeneration of the optic nerve of teleost fish. These proteins are 2',3'-cyclic nucleotide, 3'-phosphodiesterases that can bind to cellular membranes through a carboxy-terminal membrane localization domain. They interact with the tubulin cytoskeleton and are able to enhance neuronal structural plasticity by promoting the formation of neurite branches. RESULTS: PC12 stable transfectant cells expressing a fusion protein combining a red fluorescent protein with a catalytically inactive mutant version of zebrafish RICH protein were generated. These cells were used as a model to analyze effects of the protein on neuritogenesis. Differentiation experiments showed a 2.9 fold increase in formation of secondary neurites and a 2.4 fold increase in branching points. A 2.2 fold increase in formation of secondary neurites was observed in neurite regeneration assays. CONCLUSIONS: The use of a fluorescent fusion protein facilitated detection of expression levels. Two computer-assisted morphometric analysis methods indicated that the catalytically inactive RICH protein induced the formation of branching points and secondary neurites both during differentiation and neurite regeneration. A procedure based on analysis of random field images provided comparable results to classic neurite tracing methods.

RESUMEN

Techniques such as ureteral access sheath placement and balloon dilation are utilized to facilitate ureteroscopy. A retrospective review was performed to evaluate the efficacy and complications from ureteral access sheath (UAS) placement with or without sequential ureteral balloon dilation (SBD) in non-prestented patients who underwent ureteroscopy with UAS with or without SBD for renal or proximal ureteral stones from February 2014 to April 2017. This was a two-surgeon series of 124 patients divided into groups of SBD + UAS or direct UAS placement. Postoperative complications included hematuria, fever, and flank pain. Successful UAS insertion rates and postoperative complication rates were statistically significantly higher in the SBD + UAS group (P = 0.01 and 0.023, respectively). The procedure time, emergency department return, and 6-week stone-free rates were not statistically different between the groups. In conclusion, SBD + UAS has a higher success rate of UAS insertion compared to direct UAS alone, allowing for same-setting ureteroscopy. However, SBD + UAS is associated with significantly higher rates of fever, flank pain, and hematuria. We conclude that SBD + UAS and direct UAS are equivalent.

RESUMEN

Freshwater organisms are often sensitive to pesticides, but their sensitivity varies across different taxa and with pesticide type and action mode, as shown by multiple acute toxicity tests. Such variability hampers predictions about how freshwater ecosystems may be altered by pesticide toxicity, which is especially critical for understudied areas of the world such as the tropics. Furthermore, there is little information about the sensitivity of some organisms that are key components of stream food webs; this is the case of litter-feeding detritivorous invertebrates, which contribute to the fundamental process of litter decomposition. Here, we examined the sensitivity of three common detritivores [Anchytarsus sp. (Coleoptera: Ptilodactylidae), Hyalella sp. (Amphipoda: Hyalellidae) and Lepidostoma sp. (Trichoptera: Lepidostomatidae)] to three pesticides commonly used (the insecticides bifenthrin and chlorpyrifos and the fungicide chlorothalonil) using acute (48 or 96 h) toxicity tests. Our study demonstrates that common-use pesticides provoke the mortality of half their populations at concentrations of 0.04-2.7 µg L-1. We found that all species were sensitive to the three pesticides, with the highest sensitivity found for chlorpyrifos. Additionally, we used the approach of species sensitivity distributions (SSD) to compare our study species with Daphnia magna and other temperate and tropical invertebrates. We found that the study species were among the most sensitive species to chlorpyrifos and chlorothalonil. Our results suggest that tropical detritivores merit special attention in ecological risk assessment of pesticides and highlight the need for accurate ecotoxicological information from ecologically relevant species in the tropics.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To identify the arbovirus involved in febrile cases identified in a pediatric clinic in Cali, Valle del Cauca province, Colombia, and study the clinical characteristics. METHODS: A descriptive, prospective study enrolled 345 febrile children for 12 months in a pediatric clinic. Medical record registers documenting signs and symptoms, and serum samples were analyzed to detect DENV, CHIKV, and ZIKV by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction and serology methods. Diagnosis at the time of admission and discharge were compared based on laboratory test results. RESULTS: All patients were diagnosed as severe dengue at admission. Molecular detection and serology tests identified 143 CHIKV-positive (41.4%), 20 DENV-positive (5.8%), and 123 DENV-CHIKV coinfection patients (35.7%). DENV or CHIKV serology test results of these double-infected patients yield poor performance to confirm patient cases. ZIKV infection was detected in 5 patients (1.4%), every time as double or triple infections. CONCLUSION: . A sustained CHIKV circulation and transmission was confirmed causing febrile illness in children and indicating that this virus spreads even during the regular DENV season, leading to double infections and altering clinical symptoms. Specific clinical tests are necessary to closely identify the arbovirus involved in causing infectious diseases that can help in better treatment and mosquito-transmitted virus surveillance.

RESUMEN

The expansion of agriculture is particularly worrying in tropical regions of the world, where native forests are being replaced by crops at alarming rates, with severe consequences for biodiversity and ecosystems. However, there is little information about the potential effects of agriculture on the functioning of tropical streams, which is essential if we are to assess the condition and ecological integrity of these ecosystems. We conducted a litter decomposition experiment in streams within a tropical catchment, which were subjected to different degrees of agricultural influence: low (protected area, PA), medium (buffer area, BA) and high (agricultural area, AA). We quantified decomposition rates of litter enclosed within coarse-mesh and fine-mesh bags, which allowed the distinction of microbial and detritivore-mediated decomposition pathways. We used litter of three riparian species representing a gradient in litter quality (Alnus acuminata > Ficus insipida > Quercus bumelioides), and examined detritivore assemblages through the contents of litterbags and benthic samples. We found that the increasing agricultural influence promoted microbial decomposition, probably due to nutrient-mediated stimulation; and inhibited detritivore-mediated and total decomposition because of reduced detritivore numbers, most likely caused by pesticides and sedimentation. Effects were evident for Alnus and Ficus, but not for Quercus, which was barely decomposed across the gradient. Our study provides key evidence about the impact of agriculture on tropical stream ecosystem functioning, which is associated to changes in stream assemblages and may have far-reaching repercussions for global biochemical cycles.

RESUMEN

Behavior analysts are increasingly called to serve culturally and linguistically diverse populations. The culture of a population can provide context in which to identify behaviors likely to be reinforced by the client's social environment, stimuli established as reinforcers for client behavior, and behavioral repertoires shaped by the client's social environment. One of the largest and fastest growing minority groups in the United States is the Latinx population. This article offers preliminary evidence of incorporating cultural adaptations into the context of behavioral consultation for the Latinx population. Cultural adaptation of behavioral consultation can lead to improved outcomes for educators. In this study, 5 educators received behavioral consultation consisting of behavioral skills training to implement culturally responsive class-wide behavior management procedures. All 5 educators improved their treatment fidelity of the culturally responsive behavior management practices. Implications for practitioners and future research are discussed.

RESUMEN

Reading depends on the integration of both cognitive and motivational factors, yet reading motivation has received little attention in the research literature. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Baylor Revision of the Motivation to Read Survey (B-MRS; Watkins & Browning, 2015) with a sample of 731 students in Grades 6-8. The results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses supported the oblique two-factor structure of the B-MRS, which was invariant across gender, and regression analyses indicated that gender and grade were not significant predictors of reading motivation. These results add to the growing body of literature providing preliminary support for the B-MRS. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2020 APA, all rights reserved).

RESUMEN

This systematic review examines the literature on the effectiveness of child-centered play therapy (CCPT) for youths who have experienced traumatic events. Two independent reviewers conducted the search procedures, as well as all data extraction and coding. Seven peer-reviewed articles reporting treatment outcomes were included in the review. As the focus of the review was on CCPT, treatment methods were similar across the seven articles (e.g., use of similar materials). There was also some consistency in findings regarding outcomes related to internalizing problems, self-concept, and self-competence. However, there was significant variability in the outcome measures used to evaluate effects, as well as limitations regarding the study methods that impact the overall conclusions regarding the use of CCPT to treat children that have experienced traumatic events. Treatment recommendations and suggestions for future research are discussed.

RESUMEN

The effect of student-reported teacher-student relationship quality (TSRQ) on academic motivation and achievement was investigated among a sample of 690 academically at risk elementary students (52.8% male). Measures of TSRQ, achievement, and motivation were collected annually for 3 consecutive years, beginning when participants were in grade 2 (24.8%) or grade 3 (74.6%). Child-reported conflict was stable across the 3 years, whereas warmth declined. Boys and African American students reported greater conflict than did girls and Caucasian and Hispanic students. Girls and African American students reported higher warmth than boys and non-African American students. Using path analysis, the authors tested the hypothesis that measures of student motivation in Year 2 mediated the effects of conflict and warmth in Year 1 on reading and math achievement in Year 3. Child-perceived conflict predicted cross-year changes in teacher-rated behavioral engagement, which, in turn, predicted cross-year changes in reading and math achievement. Math competence beliefs also mediated the effect of child- perceived warmth on math achievement. Effects controlled for stability of measures across time, the within-wave association between measures, and baseline measures of IQ and economic adversity. Implications of findings for improving the academic achievement of students at-risk for school failure are discussed.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Examined the influence of functional impairment, stable marital status, and family satisfaction on life satisfaction trajectories for 609 individuals (435 men, 174 women) over the first 5 years after traumatic brain injury (TBI). MEASURES: Participants completed the Family Satisfaction Scale (FSS), Functional Independence Measure (FIM), and the Life Satisfaction Index (LSI) at years 1, 2, 4, and 5 after sustaining a TBI. RESULTS: Trajectory modeling revealed that higher family satisfaction was associated with increases in life satisfaction for individuals with less functional impairment. Stable marital status was not significantly associated with life satisfaction trajectories. IMPLICATIONS: Family satisfaction appears to have pronounced beneficial effects on life satisfaction for persons with less functional impairment after TBI regardless of marital status. In contrast, a stable marriage appears to have no apparent benefits to self-reported life satisfaction over the first 5 years post-TBI. Theoretical and clinical implications of these results are discussed.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The trajectories of life satisfaction for 609 individuals who sustained a traumatic brain injury (TBI) were studied. Hierarchical linear modeling analysis examined individual level growth trends over the first 5 years following TBI using gender, functional independence, age, and time to estimate life satisfaction trajectories. MEASURES: Participants completed the Functional Independence Measure and the Life Satisfaction Inventory at years 1, 2, 4, and 5 after sustaining TBI. RESULTS: Participants who reported higher functional independence at year 1 also had higher life satisfaction at year 1. Participants with lower functional independence across the 5-year period had life satisfaction trajectories that decreased at significantly greater rates than the individuals with more functional independence. The life satisfaction trajectory declined for the sample, but participants reporting lower cognitive and motor functional independence had significantly greater declines in life satisfaction trajectories. Age and gender were not significant factors in predicting life satisfaction trajectories following TBI. IMPLICATIONS: Individuals with greater cognitive and motor impairments following TBI are likely to experience significant declines in life satisfaction within 5 years of living with TBI.

RESUMEN

The antifungal activity of some known unsaturated Mannich ketones and their amino alcohols has been reported and the mechanism of antifungal action has been studied. The inhibition of the fungal ergosterol, chitin, protein synthesis and pseudohypha formation was investigated. According to our results, Mannich ketones can influence the development of pseudohyphae of Candida albicans strains. In addition, they are able to induce significant changes in the protein composition of this fungal strain. Some of our Mannich ketones have shown inhibitory effect on the fungal chitin synthase enzyme. QSAR studies were also carried out.
